Ghosts can appear similar to their appearance in life. They linger after their death due to unfinished business, and the best way to remove a ghost is to address that business for them.[1]

History

Seers of the serpentfolk empire from Vos'sykriss foresaw the Calamity. The strongest of their people were selected to be preserved in a magical stasis field under Visa Isle, where they waited to one day emerge and rebuild their empire. Those who died in the Calamity still haunt Visa Isle as ghosts.[8] The Ghostlands outside Rosohna are naturally inhabited by ghosts.[9]

After the destruction of Torthil by Neminar Drassig, the ruins were left lifeless, to later be inhabited by ghosts.[10]

The ghost of Sevil Howthess, who turned the Shadebarrow into his tomb, continues to haunt his grandchildren.[11]

Campaign One: Vox Machina

Vax'ildan, Keyleth, Tiberius, Thorbir, and Kashaw went down in the lower halls of the Amaranthine Oubliette under Vasselheim while chasing after Hotis. There they were possessed by ghosts; however, Kashaw was able to repel them using Turn Undead.[12]

There were several ghosts in Whitestone prior to the defeat of the Briarwoods. Vox Machina fought them, during which several party members were possessed.[13]

Campaign Two: The Mighty Nein

The Mighty Nein battled ghosts near Dashilla's lair in the Diver's Grave,[14] and on Rumblecusp in what was likely a sliver of Ghor Veles.[15] Jester was able to Turn Undead when the ghosts on Rumblecusp possessed Caduceus and Yasha.[16] On their way to Kravaraad, the Mighty Nein was followed by ghostly looking figures.[17]

Critical Role: Call of the Netherdeep

The ghost of Hadarai, a Calamity-era priest of Corellon, can be found in Cael Morrow.[2] Three other ghosts inhabit clay tablets in the area.[18] All died during Gruumsh's attack on the city near the end of the Calamity.

Within the Netherdeep itself seem to be the ghosts of three sisters who sheltered Alyxian and were subsequently killed by Torog's forces, but although they have the statblocks of ghosts, they are not the sisters' true spirits, but figments of Alyxian's tormented emotions.[19]

The Re-Slayer's Take

The adventures of this unusual group of adventurers in 839 PD focused mostly on defeating different forms of ghosts using special weapons.

Campaign Three: Bells Hells

While Bells Hells were exploring the ruins of Molaesmyr they saw several spirits from a distance. However, when they found a group of them who came very close, five of them resisted Deanna's Turn Undead ability, and they fought the adventurers. During the battle they scared the living, and one of the ghosts managed to possess Chetney Pock O'Pea, although he was freed thanks to Deanna's Greater Restoration. Eventually the party managed to defeat all the spirits.[20]

Many days later, when Laudna, Imogen, and Fearne were exploring Whitestone Castle at night they found Alexander, Tethany, and Vincent, three specters that died because of the Briarwoods, and because of that they attacked when they sensed Delilah's aura, being defeated shortly after by the three witches.[21]
