Chain devils, also called kytons, are lesser devils found in the Nine Hells.

Description

A typical chain devil is wrapped in many shifting chains, obscuring most of its facial features and constricting the body so that the skin becomes a deep pinkish red.[4] In one encounter, when the chain devil was preparing to fight, the chains were grinding and shifting around it,[5] but when the devil became intimidated, the chains came to a halt.[6]

One particularly large chain devil had a head deeply set in its neck, with burning, red, beady eyes staring out through a black mask. He commanded about a dozen chains, which he could retract into his body.[7]

Abilities

The following is taken from the Monster Manual, 5th Edition, page 72, but some abilities have been demonstrated in-game:

History

When Vox Machina went to the City of Dis in the Nine Hells, Keyleth was approached in the street by two individuals, including a chain devil, who demanded that she bring to their master the white tiefling—a magically disguised Vax'ildan—who had accompanied her earlier.[8] She Shapechanged into an erinyes, a higher-ranking devil, to intimidate them into backing off.[9]

Later, Vox Machina allowed themselves to be arrested so that they could enter Mentiri, the prison beneath the City of Dis, and one of the creatures that took them into custody was a chain devil.[10] As they entered the prison, they saw more roving chain devils dragging around broken bodies,[11] and they were brought to an unusually large chain devil named Krix who used his chains to remove their armor, until he was interrupted by another devil who was part of the plot to help Vox Machina escape.[12] During the escape, the party encountered another chain devil accompanied by barbed devils; the chain devil noticed the escapees and raised the alarm.[13] Finally, because Taryon had seen a chain devil in the prison speaking Common (a language he knew), he created a Programmed Illusion of a chain devil to try to mislead the pursuing devils.[14]
