Azune Nayar (pronounced Ah-ZOO-nay or AH-zoo-nay)[20] is a paladin/sorcerer played by Luis Carazo in Campaign Four.

Azune is human in appearance.[4] Although his eyes look purple from a distance, they actually have three colors: the lower part of each iris is blue, while the upper part has the reddish tone of a sunset, and the pupils are yellow;[21] at moments they visibly glow, like a sun setting behind an ocean,[22] and when he channels his sorcery they become even more like the scene they resemble (like an actual sun setting into water).[23] He is just over 5'10" tall but projects the image of being taller by his proud bearing. His body is strong, lean, and muscular, with medium brown skin and auburn hair tied back in a braid. His hair can go past his mid back when out of the braid.[24] He has a birthmark on the left side of his neck and face.[25][26] He looks like his parents, although they had dark hair and more tanned skin.[27]

His arm has a tattoo reading, "Have mercy on those I send you".[28]

Personality

Azune stands tall and proud.[25] He has an emotional side, especially when remembering old friends and witnessing significant moments.[29] He values memories and past events a lot, and struggles differentiating between letting go and forgetting, preferring to suffer if that suffering honors a specific memory.[30]

Luis Carazo described his character as: "Azune is like clay. The people around him and the world around him are going to shape who he becomes. He's not very well-read, but he has had to learn how to read people as a part of his survival. As he goes on his Arcane Marshal's patrol, he finds in the little gestures and the little exchanges that happen among the everyday people, a reason to fight on their behalf. Azune admired Thjazi, looked up to him tremendously. He was a father figure of sorts throughout the Falconer's Rebellion and there's a part of Azune that believes that he owed that man so much."[31] Despite his attention to detail, Azune tends to focus only on his own tasks (particularly if they were connected to Thjazi), and his lack of "peripheral vision" in that sense can make him miss some things.[32] For years he has internalized the idea that he must be the best at what he does, in order to always be useful (a rather misinterpreted message from his parents before they sent him to the rebellion).[33] Luis describes his character as someone with an arrested development that doesn't allow himself to embrace his emotions.[34]

Although he has indulged in the past (in things such as drinks and sex), Azune is someone who doesn't relax very often, and it would take another carefree person (like Murray Mag'Nesson or Tyranny) spending time with the paladin for him to disconnect.[35]

Biography

Background

Azune was born in a family that had been displaced during the Shapers' War; his generation never knew their homeland, instead learning about it from their grandparents.[8] Although this legacy brought with it some traditional power, Azune didn't know how to use it in his youth, learning how to fight instead.[36]

When he was 12 years old, a mercenary company called "The Gallows Choir" came to his war-scarred and starving village seeking recruits, and both Azune and his one-year-older sister Mayali competed in an obstacle course to join them; they were the most able of the candidates because their parents had been starving themselves so that both children would be well-fed for that moment.[37] Azune, however, didn't do as well as he could, and when Mayali alone was selected, she pointed to her brother's persistence in completing the course (which he proved by doing a second round when asked) and convinced them to take him as well. Although the mercenaries doubted his potential and speculated they could pass him off later to the Torn Banner, they accepted him, offering him a chance for food and survival, with both parents telling their children how proud they were of them and Azune assuring them, after some hesitation, that he'd come back for them. It was the last time he saw them.[38] Azune later remembered this as his father "passing him off" to mercenaries.[10]

The Gallows Choir abandoned Azune at the first large place they took a contract, leaving with Mayali. However, after a very hungry day and a half, he was spotted by Thjazi Fang there, and hired by him to work behind the lines moving gear and equipment. Thjazi also offered to teach him more of how to use his sword,[39] and both he and his brother Halandil took care of the boy.[40] Azune followed Thjazi into battle when he was 15.[41] He and Teor Pridesire served together in the Torn Banner for years as well.[42] Eventually, Azune developed sorcerous powers and became an Arcane Marshal of the Revolutionary Guard,[3] although still loyal to Thjazi, who wanted him to work "solo" and be his agent even then[43] (and might have even moved some strings to get him the job).[44]

"The Fall of Thjazi Fang" (4x01)

Azune joined in a failed plot to help Thjazi escape execution. His part in the plot was to confirm the presence of a magical device on the prisoner's back while he inspected him with Detect Magic (using its ritual as an excuse to let his friend know about that item with Message); the device was supposed to be a helpful glyph that would teleport Thjazi outside the walls of the city, but that didn't happen, and he was hanged.

Later that day he and two of his Enquirers brought the body to the Rookery to leave it with the Fang family, and Azune stayed to attend the Farramn ceremony. While he was there he kept following Halandil with his eyes, wanted to speak with him, but also hesitant about how to interact with him in his current version (after years serving Thjazi and doing things he wasn't necessarily proud of).[45] As more people started to arrive Azune recognized Teor, and met with Occtis Tachonis too, asking him about what had gone wrong with the plan to rescue Thjazi.

The three of them ended up leaving to check Thjazi's flop house, and there they discovered a dying Thimble with the magical glyph Azune thought he had detected on Thjazi. Teor healed the pixie, and they had to explain to her that it was too late to help Thjazi now. Azune tried to comfort her by saying Thjazi had said she had done well, but Thimble got angry, and explained how she had been ambushed before she could deliver the glyph; that made them realize that someone knew about their plan and had disturbed it, and that person had left a fake clue that deceived Azune's Detect Magic before the hanging. They were joined by Kattigan Vale shortly after and he helped them find clues, including some signs that pointed to the Crow Keepers as the responsible for the attack against Thimble; they also discovered that they had taken a treasure she and Thjazi had stolen two months ago, so Thimble drew it and told the others what she knew about it. She then told them that she wanted to see Thjazi's body, and Azune took her drawing with him when they left.[46]

"Broken Wing" (4x02)

Azune and the others returned to Thjazi's funeral at the very end of it, hearing the melody of Broken Wing in the distance as Hal and his youngest daughter, Hero, played to honor the dead. When they arrived and Thimble had a moment to mourn Thjazi, Thaisha silently asked Azune if they knew what had happened; he approached the body, and before inspecting it he apologized to Thimble, admitting that in his own last conversation with Thjazi he didn't tell her anything about her, but Azune had wanted to make her feel better back at the flop house, and she told him it was ok. In Thjazi's clothes Azune found the item he had Detected before the execution, and Occtis let him know that it had been enchanted with potent illusory properties to fool his Detect Magic, assuring the Arcane Marshal that he had done his own part well. After that they spoke for a bit about potential traitors within their plan, and about their plans for the next day; Azune told them he could check with the marshals to see what he could find out. After that he spent some time speaking with Loza Blade, who told him about her plans of retirement in her family farm in Dol-Rungja.

Azune returned to the Brethren Hall, and next morning, while still remembering Thjazi's death, he visited the office of his captain, Edrian Fazir, finding him on a meeting with Sir Harondus Einfasen; the nobleman greeted Azune and they had a short chat about him being with Thjazi before his death, and how he had been a complicated figure. Then, he explained how the resources dedicated to the security of Dol-Makjar were being re-distributed, so that divisions such as the Arcane Marshals would receive more funding; when Azune asked what would happen with the other divisions, Einfasen explained that the Revolutionary Guard and the Gate Guard would be replaced by soldiers provided by the different Sundered Houses, with Sir Harondus himself as a security overseer. Azune maintained cordiality, but he deduced from that interaction that the nobleman, while not malevolent, was power-hungry and felt like he deserved to be in charge of stuff. After Sir Harondus left, Edrian said that at least their own division would get bonuses, but Azune bitterly replied it would only be while they were useful and Einfasen soldiers were unable to replicate their own magical skills. Edrian then mentioned that the Sundered Houses were making more moves, and that they intended to visit the Penteveral that same day. Shortly after, Azune changed the schedule so that it was her turn to patrol the Crow Keepers' territory.

"The Snipping of Shears" (4x03)

Azune was patrolling with Horace when he saw Murray angrily walking nearby, so he stopped her and the two of them started speaking in an alleyway through the Message cantrip. She told him about what was happening in the Penteveral, and he updated her about the situation in the Brethren Hall, which led to a small argument: he refused to believe that he would stop being useful to the city, since he would fight for a place in it, but the dwarf insisted that the houses would train replacements for him in her school, and the more effort Azune made the more he would be following their designs. Murray was exhausted and sleep-deprived, but mentioned that House Tachonis was looking for Occtis, so they left to find him first (after Azune let Horace know he had something to do).

After visiting the Guard Tower and discovering the aftermath of a fight there, they went to Hal's house, finding the host there with Thimble and Kattigan, who explained that they had discovered Casimir was the traitor, and that he had left the city chasing Cyd, who had stolen from him. They were joined shortly after by Teor, who had been saved by Tyranny and Wicander Halovar after the latter's family tried to get rid of the nama warrior. Azune, realizing that the houses were getting more daring after Thjazi's death, and how several of the people there had been making enemies in the last hours, told them that he could get them horses to leave Dol-Makjar; when he hesitated about the possibility of leaving with them, Thimble encouraged him to catch their enemies within the city, and Kattigan teased him about how much he had grown (causing the Arcane Marshal to feel proud of himself for a moment). He went with them to the Falcon's Rest, and after getting steeds for them and watching them go he stayed near the monument, reciting the names of those who fell in the Falconer's Rebellion.

"Stone-Faced" (4x04)

Azune recited the names, including those that hadn't been written in the monument, and stopping after Thjazi's; he then stayed silent for a moment, conflicted, before whispering the names of the five people that left, wondering if they would forget about him. He returned to the Rookery, finding a surprisingly revitalized Murray (which caused the paladin to wonder what she drank), and she convinced him and Hal to join them on a new mission. They stopped at the Archanade first to speak with Bolaire Lathalia, and although Azune was confused about it, he trusted Halandil when he told him to be on guard, and kept his warhammer ready. The curator, somewhat angry because Thimble had left Dol-Makjar, brought them to his secret archive (which made Azune feel uncomfortable), and from there to his private vault; there Murray was so excited she tried to shake a giant's severed hand to see if she could speak to it, and Azune noted that even if it worked, the giant might not want to speak with her. In the conversation that followed (about how Thjazi didn't trust Bolaire and warned Murray about him) the curator revealed (at Hal's insistence) that he was actually just his mask: a sentient artifact crafted as part of the plan to kill Rauwyn the Trickster, and able to possess bodies to move. Azune was fascinated by the mask, and when Murray wondered if Thjazi hated him, Azune theorized that he probably found him useful as a tool (something Bolaire himself confirmed); while he examined the mask the Arcane Marshal noticed a small imperfection and cast Mending on it, but before the cantrip took effect Bolaire had to leave to meet some visitors, and when he returned he was in a hurry, telling the group something was going on at the Palazzo Davinos (Azune cast False Life on himself, seeing that Hal was also preparing).

When they reached the castle Azune had his Detect Magic ready and was tense, seeing that everything was dark but surprisingly clean and undisturbed; he walked with Bolaire when he approached to pick a melted candle, and after a brief debate about its necromantic purposes, they asked the paladin to Mend it. Azune, after getting closer to Hal as a precaution, did that, and the moment the candle was reconstituted, the bard heard something and the others followed him out. They reached the Lloy estate, finding there Sir Julien Davinos, Lady Aranessa Royce, Vaelus, Thaisha, and the dead body of Occtis. As the word "remember" reverberated in Azune's mind, he witnessed a miracle: combining Bolaire's tools with Murray's Mage Hand and Portent, and supported by Hal's Bardic Inspiration and Thaisha's Guidance, they successfully removed the Stone of Nightsong from inside Occtis, and he started breathing again as the ground shook and his body started repairing itself. Everyone was happy, and although Sir Julien was furious about the connection between the young man and House Tachonis (responsible for the massacre in the Palazzo), Lady Aranessa calmed him down, and reminded the group that they still had fights ahead.

Azune convinced Julien to walk outside the estate so that they could make sure they hadn't been followed, and to give the knight a chance to calm down; there, he told him that while he admired his forthrightness about Occtis and his family, he was also being reckless, and that at that moment, instead of antagonizing everyone, he should make the active choice of trusting the rest of the group, letting them earn that trust in time. As a gesture, Azune revealed that he had known Sir Julien for a long time, since he was at Thjazi's side at the end of the Falconer's Rebellion, but during that encounter the knight hadn't looked at him even once, being too focused on Thjazi. Because of it, Azune expressed his willingness to speak in favor of Julien if he ever decided to speak about the past; however, the latter bitterly answered that the Arcane Marshal was probably glad to see him and his family so low, and when Azune tried to explain that wasn't the case, Julien waked back inside, and the paladin followed, still uncertain about having been followed there. In the period before dawn, the group discussed Occtis's status and the implications for House Tachonis, as well as the repercussions for other political forces in the city; they gradually defined a plan, with the newly resurrected necromancer leaving Dol-Makjar with an escort to seek answers about his post-mortem visions, while the rest stayed behind to sound out the Sundered Houses and look for ways to weaken them (with Azune pointing out that historically the houses hadn't worked together, and they could widen the fractures between them). At the end of that conversation Azune formally introduced himself to Julien, who didn't know his name, but when he asked for his, the knight replied that they would see who he was when he returned to Dol-Makjar.

After the Seekers left, Bolaire, Murray, Azune, and Hal prepared for their respective jobs, agreeing that they should find a place to meet as often as possible, preferably without connections to any of them. Bolaire assured Azune that he had nothing to do with Thjazi's execution. Azune then returned to the Brethren Hall where people were discussing the mysterious darkness around the Palazzo Davinos the previous night, and how its occupants had apparently left without letting anyone know.

"To the Hounds!" (4x09)

Azune was present when Lord Harondus Einfasen assembled over half the Revolutionary Guard in the courtyard of Brethren Hall and dismissed them, confiscating their weapons but providing "generous compensation". Azune noted that many of them were angry and upset, although he did his best to present a cooperative face to Einfasen, and agreed to show him where the Arcane Marshals worked; on their way there he noticed that Constance, the record keeper, was also gone, and when he asked, Lord Einfasen told him they were also centralizing the record keeping of their organization. He later congratulated Azune on his efficiency in his work, and the Lieutenant offered to double efforts to root out arcane threats overlooked by the city (after the lord asked about it and got no satisfactory answer about it happening in the past). Einfasen complimented him on his rapid rise through the ranks, correctly guessing that he had started his militar career at a young age, and noted that it was good he was at peace with the recent but necessary changes in Dol-Makjar; Azune, in turn, managed not to reveal his youthful participation in the Falconer's Rebellion by stating that he wasn't part of any remarkable feat in his early days in the army.

Later that day, when Azune finally left to meet with the Schemers at The Seven Stars in the Rookery, he noticed that some of his former colleagues were joining the Sons of Dawn, a mercenary group. When he arrived at the tavern he and his group got a table in the aviary, where they couldn't be easily overheard. Soon afterward Murray started wailing and crying due to her own day at work, and Azune comforted her; he then spent some time organizing his notes of everything he wanted to talk about. The four of them talked about what they had observed that day, and Azune stated they needed to find a way to give the unemployed guards a new place before they all joined "the enemy". They then spoke of the funds they had available, with Bolaire explaining he could potentially divert funds from the blank check that Lady Amariya wanted to give him to modify the wings of the Archanade. Azune said that even if they didn't organize an entire resistance movement just yet, they should keep in touch with people that would be willing to inform them from inside other organizations in the city, the same way they learned about each of their respective factions.

Later, when Halandil went downstairs to socialize with a rich couple, Orus Blade and Camilla Lushthryce, who had left the Royce gala at the Palazzo Davinos, Azune and Murray stayed out of sight, although paying some attention to that conversation. The paladin said that he suspected Sir Harondus might know about his connection with the rebellion, and shared the name of Varen Kadorn as a potential ally now working for the Sundered Houses that the Schemers could contact, should Azune himself go missing; Murray told the Arcane Marshal that each of them would have to be a bit of a suck-up in their respective jobs to survive. Shortly afterward, Azune's attitude became cautious when he noticed Orus activating a ceramic glyph to cast See Invisibility (to make sure his conversation with Hal was not being watched). Azune then took out the piece of ceramic Thjazi had with him when he was hanged, and it became clear the dead orc had never had the chance to break it and realize it was fake. Murray wondered what had stopped him, and the paladin theorized if something of someone had "killed" him in a different way even before the moment of the execution.

Plotting in Dol-Makjar

After half an hour of conversation with Orus about spell glyphs, requested by Azune (during which the paladin assured the merchant he wasn't in trouble, and he confirmed to him that Thjazi's fake glyph might have been intended to contain a different spell originally, but in any case it was still breakable), the Schemers ended the meeting; before the orc left Azune asked if he could keep a broken spell glyph he had used, and he agreed (they still damaged it to erase any sign that could connect it to its original owner). Azune announced to his friends that he wanted to keep the loyalty of some of the fired guards of Dol-Makjar, and Bolaire promised him he would be able to get some funds for that soon; the Arcane Marshal also stated he would try to visit the Penteveral the next day, and suggested the possibility of creating a fake confession from Occtis and use it (along with his signet ring) to sow discord between House Tachonis and House Einfasen.

After the other three noted that Azune seemed very anxious, Bolaire told him he should try to sleep that night (even offering advice if he wanted it), and Halandil offered him to stay with him in his house. On their way there Azune was remembering how Thjazi had taken him from the streets, when suddenly his eyes shone slightly, as he heard the word "remember"; he noticed the same vibration he felt when Murray and Bolaire brought Occtis back, and knew that a danger (a Halovar carriage, specifically) was waiting near Hal's house. He warned the bard via Message, and after receiving a Bardic Inspiration, Azune kept moving as if he was on patrol (casting Detect Magic to make it believable), while Hal went around his house and into an alleyway. The Arcane Marshal found Sir Filoneus Halovar waiting, and they spoke for a bit: Azune explained he had seen Hal walking alone and accompanied him for a bit as part of his night patrol, although he didn't know his destination or what he was doing; Filoneus believed him and praised his diligence, stating they needed more men like him, willing to look into the darkness (to that Azune responded with a joke, noting it was difficult to make more men like him). Before he left, the nobleman told the paladin that if he saw Hal again, he should let him know he was invited to a meeting with Photarch Yanessa; he also asked him if he had seen Teor and Talcydimir Pridesire, and Azune told him he hadn't seen them recently. After Filoneus told him he didn't need an escort back home, he left, and after a bit, Azune entered Hal's home and told him about the conversation. The host offered the paladin some food and they talked about Thjazi's final moments, and about how, regardless of what he was thinking at the end, there was something suspicious; Azune was emotional about how the Fang brothers had always taken care of him, wondering if Thjazi had sacrificed himself so the Arcane Marshal who inspected him wouldn't be held responsible for his escape. When he started weeping, Halandil helped him calm down, absolving him of any responsibility, reminding him that in life they couldn't always choose who became the price to pay for a cause, but they should always keep moving towards a better tomorrow. After a bit, Hal insisted that Azune should rest, and the latter fell asleep before he expected.

The next morning Azune woke up early and went to Falcon's Rest, noticing upon arrival that the nests there were empty. He met with Varen Kadorn, his friend, and they spoke via Message; he told Azune about the arrest of Royce men in Riesingürtle, and wondered if he should go into hiding (since he was working for one of their vassal houses), but was suddenly distracted by the lack of falcons present in the area. Azune, understanding his friend was having a traumatic episode, calmed him down like Hal had done with him, and told him that they couldn't just run away. He advised him to resign and tell other people working for House Royce and their allies to do the same if they feared they could be arrested; then, he told Varen that him and others like him, who still heard the falcon's cry, should work for the paladin and his allies, infiltrating mercenary groups and other organizations connected to the other Sundered Houses. Varen agreed, promising to check with his contacts in different manors; before saying goodbye, Azune told him that if anything happened to him, Varen should seek Murray and talk to her like he did to him. After that Azune met with Captain Fazir, who told him to investigate potential illusion magic detected in the Palazzo Davinos (commenting too that the strange rumors around the Royce gala included the noble family kidnapping their workers to take them to Faerie with them); he also noted that Harondus Einfasen had personally requested the paladin for this job. They talked for a bit about the low morale among remaining members of the Revolutionary Guard, and Azune noticed that the captain wasn't willing to do anything too rebellious about it, so he simply offered to help him whenever he needed it. After that, Azune met with his subordinates (Horace, Dala, Groto) and reminded them that he was there for them if they ever needed to vent to someone, and that they should always have in mind who they really were, regardless of the changes in their institution; he noted they seemed to appreciate their attitude, but was unable to ascertain how much of it hid actual determination beyond the hierarchy that made them listen to him. Azune himself thought about how he had acted as a member of the Revolutionary Guard until then, based on his loyalty and utility to Thjazi, and how he now needed to change his perspective and be more proactive in some ways.[47]

On his way to the Palazzo Davinos Azune told his team he had to stop by the Archanade for a moment, and while they waited outside he visited Murray and Bolaire there; he explained his intention to plant evidence and look for ways of incriminating House Tachonis; as a precaution he gave Bolaire his two spell glyphs and the candle he had found in the palazzo the first time he visited it, while Murray got one half of Orus's broken spell glyph (so she could leave it with someone else). After that Azune resumed his mission. He found Sir Harondus Einfasen already waiting for them at the Palazzo Davinos, and after a brief debate he was invited to accompany the Arcane Marshals and see them work; he was interested in Azune's explanations about his discoveries (of how a specific room of the palace was completely devoid of magical presence, despite having been obviously repaired with magic). After that Harondus requested to speak with the Lieutenant in private, pressuring him to agree, so they left Groto alone collecting evidence (which included a Mended wall and a damaged table), and Azune subtly Guided himself as a precaution. In the hallway the Lord Knight told Azune that someone in the Chamber had vowed for him to have his current mission, and then started inquiring about Azune's past with the rebellion; the paladin assured him that he had no loyalty to that cause and he had despised Thjazi (lying about him kidnapping children to use as cannon fodder during the rebellion) to the point of making sure he was the one inspecting the rebel before he was hanged. Harondus was satisfied, but reminded the Arcane Marshal to fear him, since him knowing about Azune's rebel past made him dangerous. Before leaving, the nobleman asked Azune if he was a follower of the Candescent Creed, and whe Azune told him he wasn't, Harondus encouraged him to pretend to be; he also told him he would be in charge of reviewing anything regarding Hal Fang's ownership of the Hallowed Round with prejudice. Shortly after being left alone, an Invisible Murray and a Disguised Bolaire joined Azune. After some planning, they ended up combining efforts and targetting Groto with their combined magic: Murray used Musical Migraine so that the Arcane Marshal would hear echoes of the screams of the massacre that took place there, while Bolaire's Phantasmal Force made him believe he had triggered a glyph containing a magical recording of the event (in which Occtis tried to leave evidence of his own murder, as the actual wizard had described it), and Azune sent ominous warnings about the priestly houses through Message. While his friends left, Azune immediately went with Groto to "help" him, and brought him to a more public space so that more people would hear what he had experienced, and was glad to see that his co-worker no longer believed House Royce had returned to Faerie. During the conversation an Einfasen soldier was keeping record of it, but Azune made sure Dala made the same; to her, he showed one half of Orus's spell glyph and Thimble's drawing of the Stone of Nightsong as evidence he had found in the scene of the crime.

After that Azune caught up with Murray and Bolaire, and the three of them went to the Hallowed Round, where they told Hal about their activities and discoveries. While they were there they decided to examine the paint Thjazi had left to his brother, and when Murray was examining it Azune and the others helped; it was confirmed that behind a faint and strangely uniform illusory aura (the kind of effect that would be used to make it prettier or shinier) there was something else, particularly strong in the mural Shadia had been painting: a strong necromantic aura, and an even stronger conjuration aura. The Schemers talked about what it meant, and its purpose, and Murray wondered if Shadia specifically had given the paint a different purpose by virtue of who she was (causing Hal to try to touch it to see if something happened, as Azune touched his shoulder and asked about the feeling and intention behind it). They were suddenly interrupted when Drangur Tash arrived to tell Halandil that their Dramatis Arcana, Misha Undragor, had been arrested by the Arcane Marshals; when Murray showed irritation and Azune assured her that not all members of his organization were the same, she argued that was precisely the problem. After some preparation (which included Murray casting Augury to confirm they were on the right path, and Hal casting Aid on the group) they went to the Brethren Hall. There, with some effort, they convinced the Arcane Marshals to let Misha go, after learning they had been using him to try to find Demodus (allegedly the thief who had taken some relics from Obrimus Manor); during the conversation with the old orc Azune assured him he wasn't a suspect, and confirmed his injured lip had been because of an accident, not due to a violent arrest (although it was noted that someone trying to help him got punched). Before they left Azune stopped to talk to the lieutenant who made the arrest, Shemad Il-Kafsareh, and took his report, confirming that Misha was a dead end (to which the other Arcane Marshal replied by saying they would keep investigating). As the Schemers were walking away with Misha, who was going to be under house arrest at Hal's house, Murray told Azune via Message that this meant the bard's house would be watched by House Tachonis; when the paladin noted that more than one house was doing so already, she cast See Invisibility, confirming that they were not being spied on by magical means.[48] They explained Misha the terms of his freedom, and Azune told him that if someone bothered him again, he could tell them the paladin had already talked with him; after that, they left Misha preparing tea at Hal's home, and they went to the Seven Stars. On their way there, Azune reminded Halandil of Filoneus words about a meeting with Yanessa, and mentioned that given the actions of the other houses, it would make sense for House Halovar and their sect to try to control places where stories were made (like his new theater).

At the tavern, Halandil asked the Rountrees to wait for him upstairs, and after getting some Guidance from Azune and a bottle of wine, he followed them. In the meantime, the other Schemers got a table and Azune asked for donkey steaks for dinner; the Arcane Marshal had Detect Magic active as a precaution, and he and Bolaire were paying attention to a table nearby, where a curious group of people were playing cards. Azune decided to use Control Flames to briefly turn all the flames in the tavern blue like Demodus used to do, and one of the players had a visible reaction. Since Murray had recognized him as the smuggler Pimley Morn, she went to talk to him in the bathroom while Bolaire (Disguised and pretending to be "Delex Blix") joined the game. After a bit, Hal went downstairs and joined Azune, watching with him how a the game continued, until Pimley left in a hurry (with Murray confirming via Message that everything was ok) and Bolaire announced he was going to leave too. Shortly after Sir Marten, a talking dog, arrived to the tavern and after greeting Hal, loudly asked "His Majesty" to go back to his family; Augustus Valian, who had been pretending to be a commoner until then, took the money he had won and prepared to leave. He stopped for a moment to speak with Hal (since he was the one recommending that place to the entourage coming from Timmony), and while he was doing so, Azune observed the king in silence, noticing his wounds and scars from past battles. Gus also exchanged some words with him too, praising his work and confirming many in the Revolutionary Guard had lost their jobs recently.

After that the Schemers left and shared the information they had acquired, with Hal noting that they should avoid getting Romina into trouble. Since Murray had learned that Demodus had been left with the Crow Keepers (because he had borrowed money from them) they went to Caravan Hill, since it was their territory (and Azune knew he could have an excuse to interact with them, as an Arcane Marshal). They stopped to speak with Temelow, a fortune teller, who answered Murray's questions and ended up confirming Demodus was with the Crow Keepers but he might not be for long, and shared clues of where to find them. As they were making their way Azune kept thinking about the concept of rebirth and one of the cards Temelow had shown them (a coiling dragon with water and trees growing out of it), and that helped him find a hidden entrance to the sewers; after some hesitation from Halandil, they closed the door behind them, the bard still with them. After moving in the darkness for a while they heard some voices and noticed the light of torches in the distance, finding an area where Crow Keepers were interacting with an unnatural presence, with Demodus still with them on the ground (Azune used Control Flames to put out his own torch as a precaution, to remain hidden). They decided to trick them: Bolaire used Phantasmal Force to make one of the criminals believe that guards had found the hiding place and had attacked him before running away; Azune and Hal helped, with the former throwing a brick into the water to create some noise, while the latter used Minor Illusion to make the actual sounds of Bolaire's illusion audible to everyone else. They were successful, although in the confusion that followed one of the Crow Keepers actually saw Bolaire and prepared to attack him;[49] the warlock Commanded him to be quiet and Azune killed him with his hammer, whispering "one" as he did. After that, the paladin reduced the intensity of the flames in the area with his magic, and shortly after Murray tricked Zaghi (the guild's captain) and Laumy (a strange mold monster) into fighting each other. Using that distraction, Hal rescued the unconscious Demodus, and Azune helped Murray bring him upstairs with them. Since Crow Keepers were trying to attack them, Azune activated his Innate Sorcery, surrounding himself with power, attacking with Booming Blade and protecting himself with Shield, making himself untouchable. He kept going, assisted by Murray and Demodus (the latter had summoned an illusory knight pretending to be Azune's brother coming to help him), and eventually they ended up with one single Crow Keeper alive, surrounded by the paladin's thunderous magic; they then knocked the criminal unconscious for interrogation.

When the battle was over, they spoke for a bit about the details of how Demodus ended up with the Crow Keepers (which included the fact that Dean Kora was aware of the meeting between him and Lady Trimus), and by the end of it Azune praised the fact he had escaped, and the illusionist formally presented a complaint to him about the actions of House Tachonis (which Azune dutifully wrote down). The Schemers then began to investigate the area, preparing to leave. When they uncovered a hiding spot with a stash of magic items, including some of the blank spell glyphs Orus Blade had lost, that caused Murray and Azune to share an elated hug. Shortly after, however, their mood worsened, as they spoke about the possibility of Dean Kora being fully aware of what would be the fate of Demodus working for House Tachonis. Murray declared that she deserved a beating like the one Demodus had received; Azune told her he would help her if she needed it, and after a exchanging some comments about Murray's thoughts about the theater (of how it felt important, and Thjazi likely knew that) they shared a moment of mutual appreciation. After a bit they went to the other room, finding Hal next to two bodies, and holding Bolaire's mask; Azune, confused,[50] recognized the corpse of Aubrus Drime, an informant of the Revolutionary Guard, and was surprised to find him dressed with the clothes of the Crow Keeper they had captured. Halandil then placed the mask on the criminal's face, allowing Bolaire to come back to life, and the group started making their way back to the city.[51] As they walked away Azune complained about feeling useless after spending so much magical resources, but Murray told him that wasn't the case. There was a small argument about if it would be better for Demodus to leave the city as soon as possible or if they should find a safe house for him; the illusionist's maturity was also questioned, with Murray saying he was a kid, with a brain still developing, while Azune argued that he was just a bit younger than him. The paladin escorted Demodus and Bolaire to the latter's apartment, and before he left he apologized to the curator for trying to fix imperfections of the mask with magic days earlier; he responded by saying it was ok, and that he appreciated the the aspects of his identity reflected on his face, the same way a piece in a museum would be kept damaged to show its history (when Azune asked him if he saw himself as a thing or a person, Bolaire declared he was a thing that could dream, and being a story was in some ways better than being someone). Before leaving, Azune told Bolaire he was a good man.

In the morning, on his way to work, Azune stopped to see if Varen was at Falcon's Rest but he didn't see him; he decided to leave a message for him there, lighting a torch and using Control Flames to leave some symbols inside the fire (a falcon surrounded by seven stars and a setting sun). The following hours the Arcane Marshal focused on doing his job, and even though he paid some attention to Shemad from time to time, he didn't learn anything new about the unpleasant lieutenant. The Schemers met that evening at the Seven Stars, and Murray decided to improve the group's mood Identifying the treasures they had found in the sewers; when talking about the blank spell glyphs, Azune wondered if they should try to meet with Orus again, and Murray expressed interest in visiting his factory. After Bolaire informed the group that he planned to take the Pariah Blades away from the museum (Azune was worried about them being taken to spaces were magic was restricted, until the curator revealed they weren't magical by themselves), he and Hal left to make preparations, leaving the other two alone. Azune showed Murray the black candle he had taken from the Palazzo Davinos days before, wanting to know more about it, and she Identified it too, revealing its dark nature as a Candle of Slaughter, and clarifying that it had already lost its magic, even after being Mended. Encouraged and Guided by the paladin, she cast Augury, wondering what would happen if one of those candles was completely consumed: she determined that such items used to be more common but there was now one other candle in the hands of House Tachonis; she also got visions she shared with Azune. After that, the diviner and the paladin went to the Rookery and waited for their friends, as they talked about the Augury, and how, even if the ideal plans of House Tachonis (to turn Occtis into an angel of death to destroy the Golden Orchard) had changed, they would still try to complete them the hard way. When Hal and Bolaire finally arrived to the former's theater, they looked quite shocked, and they explained how Lady Amariya Dacen Cormoray had caught them, and how she had ended up trapped by Bolaire's long lost sister inside the coffin Murray and the curator had been examining days before. Azune said that if there were no witnesses it wasn't as bad as it could have been, although Murray wondered if the other Cormorays knew where their relative was going to, and noted how concerning it was that so many nobles were suddenly missing (even though Azune said it could be useful to make the houses turn on each other). After Bolaire (encouraged by Hal) shared some information about his sister Termina and her role trapping Rauwyn, Murray and Azune also shared their own discoveries regarding the candle. After some conversation it was suggested that they could use Thjazi's paint to "disguise" the Pariah Blades and the box in which they could keep the coffin that had swallowed Amariya; Murray confirmed it was a good idea, so they went to the Hallowed Round and did exactly that, leaving the swords as prop weapons and writing "Extra wigs (may be lice)" on the box containing the coffin.

Having agreed not to see each other the following day, each of the Schemers focused on their own work. Azune talked to Harondus, who gave him the task of investigating the mysterious disappearance of Lady Dacen Cormoray, last seen at the Archanade, which the Arcane Marshal accepted. Before leaving he innocently shared the report about Misha's arrest with the noble, noting that there was nothing written about the "bail" Hal has paid for the release; Harondus seemed slightly surprised, and hours later he had Shemad arrested, as he publicly announced that such corruptions wouldn't be tolerated. Azune spent the day collaborating with Bolaire, trying to find Lady Amariya, and he made a report about it that didn't contain anything suspicious. The next day, Azune checked on Groto, who was still recovering from his "visions", and the other Arcane Marshal expressed his concerns about being in danger (to which his lieutenant responded by saying he believed they all were); Groto assured him he would be back on patrol soon, and Azune asked him to tell him if he needed anything. When he visited Falcon's Rest, the paladin noticed Varen had left a response for him: "Tonight". That evening the Schemers gathered once more, and Varen was waiting, asking to talk to them in private; using Message, Azune confirmed to Murray that they could trust him. The guard told them he had left his job, as Azune had suggested, and had been testing the waters with veterans, telling them that if they were going to join mercenary groups and/or the Houses' service, they should wait to see if he could find them something better. The result was that there were now 350 people waiting; Azune was delighted, and when Murray expressed concern, saying that perhaps this was a bit excessive, Varen clarified that no names or details had been shared, and that these people were equally ready to act for a new cause when they were told.[52] Azune mentioned their movement should be able to work in plain sight with coordination and efficiency, noting that the Falconer's Rebellion might have failed because there were too many fires being started independently. He agreed to meet Varen near Falcon's Rest and, after congratulating him, asked him to create small groups of people willing to infiltrate the Sundered Houses' staff.

After Varen left the group talked about what could be a good symbol, and ended up agreeing the magpie was a good choice; Azune felt confident about it and liked the idea of choosing phrases and codes connected to those birds for their movement. Shortly after Orus and Romina arrived wanting to speak with the Schemers, so Azune and Murray went downstairs to talk to the merchant: he told them about how a detective he had hired had discovered where his stolen glyphs had been kept (describing the chaotic room Demodus had disguised with magic), and informed them that the Crow Keepers had dissolved as a guild; Murray and Azune didn't tell him they knew most of that information, and the latter added that their enemies seemed to be coordinated, so they had to be too (he also noticed that Orus seemed anxious, and that his loyalty to the cause was based on the danger his business faced). When Orus mentioned that difficult times were coming to his business, now he couldn't sell spell glyphs, Murray asked to visit his kiln, and the orc told them they could come that same night; Azune asked if the Houses had taken his materials, but Orus confirmed they hadn't, and Hand and Wheel was currently trying to determine what could be saved to start a business outside the city. After that, Murray and Azune rejoined their friends as they were ending their conversation with Romina. They told the maid to be careful (with Azune asking her to pay attention to the treatment the Halovar name got in the Stahlkeep), and before she left Murray gave her a gold piece, which immediately made the woman emotional, as she asked Hal to give the coin to her sister instead; after a collective moment of panic, however, Bolaire confirmed that Romina's sudden dread was caused by the knowledge of the Einfasens being willing to kill her if they ever saw her with a type of coin that didn't come from them; because of that, both Bolaire and Azune praised her caution before she left. They talked a bit about the information Romina had given them (including the fact that Lord Tachonis would return to the city the day of the premiere) and Murray expressed her concern and argued with Bolaire about the possibility of someone having tampered with the paint Thjazi had left for Hal, and how Primus might know about it; Azune, however, suggested they could investigate before drawing further conclusions. As promised, Orus took them to his workshop, where they met Rohir Howl, the book keeper; when asked about it, he told them how five or six weeks before Thjazi (accompanied by a falcon none of the Schemers knew about) had commissioned the amphorae with very specific properties, instructing them to leave them in the Tanners without supervision. After that, the group asked Orus and Rohir details about the creation of new spell glyphs, and started making plans outloud about the utility of the space Hand and Wheel wasn't using at the moment; however, they stopped when Orus told them he still had to prioritize the safety of his own people, even if he wanted to help them.

Before going to bed that night, Azune followed his usual routines, but after undressing he stopped to stare at his equipment, thinking how he had become a thing in order to play the role Thjazi wanted for him; he started speaking to the dead man aloud, admitting he didn't know how to be without him, how he wasn't sure where the lies about himself ended, if the version of himself his friends knew was even real, and how Thjazi himself seemed to have been hundreds of people in one person (something Azune himself understood, since it had its uses). The sorcerer then looked at his own reflection and started unleashing magic, casting, without realizing, Alter Self for the first time as he took the features of his friends, his boss, and then his family (alternating between his father and mother and noticing that despite the coloration, his face was a mix of theirs); when he realized the spell he was casting, he got closer to the mirror and carefully changed again, modifying his features one last time to see how he would look if Thjazi was his father. After that, Azune finally went to bed, thinking of the word "remember" in the language of his people (which he was starting to recall) and listening to the sound of the river nearby, similar to a growl coming from the depths of the world; when he finally fell asleep, he dreamed of a big head rising above him and laughing with joy, recognizing its people.

The next day Azune met with Varen, as promised, the former shared with his friend the symbol of their movement (the magpie) and some key phrases to recognize each other; the Arcane Marshal emphasized the importance of finding agents willing to serve the Houses while staying loyal to them, and Varen assured him he would have potential candidates the next day. That day Azune dealt mostly with paperwork and handled Groto's return to the job. That night he met his friends, and Murray brought new funds for their plans. Azune got 50 gold pieces that, next morning, he gave to Varen, to pay those allies willing to work as security in the gala at the Lyceum (a good way to gauge how many would come for that amount); he also revealed the direction of the warehouse in which they would keep resources and food for those people in need of them, and Varen praised the idea, since that bought the goodwill of their allies and their allies' friends. Before saying goodbye, Azune and Varen showed each other the small magpie ornaments they wore in their respective outfits, and exchanged key phrases ("Any good tidings?" answered with "Always for a friend"). Later that day Azune noticed that the search for Demodus hadn't been closed, but all the resources were focused on looking for Lady Amariya instead; he made sure to add Occtis's Tachonis signet ring to the evidence found in that investigation. That night the Schemers met again and Murray distributed the new spell glyphs she had made (Azune took one of Shield for himself). After that, they decided to visit the Tanners to further investigate where Hal's paint came from. They ended up finding a secret place where they met Hollis Kinnywater, a halfling warlock who confirmed Thjazi had been working with his mistress and that no one tampered with her things (like the paint) if she didn't want them to; they arranged a potential audience with her when she returned to Dol-Makjar, and although Hollis couldn't reveal any secrets, he gave Hal some clues about his brother, and casually mentioned how the men of the Brethren Hall had been cleaning falcon nests. After that, Azune confirmed he had noticed the lack of falcons, but he had thought it was a symbolic movement, but now understood it had an actual motivation behind (thinking again about Thjazi's falcon companion). They decided to return to the Hallowed Round once more to check the paint, and Enhanced by Hal, Guided by Azune, and encouraged by Bolaire, Murray tasted a tiny amount of that substance as she tried to analyze its arcane nature: she confirmed it had the same buzzing energy as the Stone of Nightsong when they held it (but in negative); she also discovered it had been rendered from blood (potentially of celestial origin) and now it was something new, made to create dreams and figments, endless possibility that could become real. After those revelations Hal angrily broke a portelain mask against a wall and walked away, and Azune followed him, unsure about what to say as he listened to the bard complaining about his brother's secrets and how he had left them fragments of an incomplete image. Azune asked Hal about the tree growing in the theater and asked about it, walking towards it as the older man explained it represented the eternal and the Rungjani, enduring even after the gods, and that it was as old as history. Azune remembered one of Temelow's cards, showing trees and a dragon, and felt suddenly exhausted, thinking about the history of that space and that tree, and how, despite the sacred contradictions of that theater people had always come to live, dance, and celebrate one way or the other.

Varen ended up getting Azune twenty people to work at the gala, and gave him a list of eight people who still worked for the Sundered Houses (most with vassals of House Royce, but also one with House Cormoray and two with House Einfasen). When the night of the gala finally came, Azune and a team of Arcane Marshals attended as part of the security team; the paladin hadn't thought too much about his outfit, but Hal got him a half-cape and a brooch with a golden bird (a symbol their allies would identify); shortly after Murray took a moment to compliment his simple but elegant look, and commented how Hal, despite the anger he had shown in the theater, was now as charming as ever. During the event, Azune observed with fascination many of the attendants (spending extra time on Lady Gatani, Harondus's wife, before she put on a mask), and was surprised to see Augustus Valian (who had stayed in Dol-Makjar despite his original plans). The latter wanted to talk to Photarch Yanessa Halovar, but Azune noticed that when she arrived, the King of Timmony kept his distance for a bit. Azune was also secretly relieved that, in the middle of the masquerade, Sir Filoneus hadn't noticed him, since otherwise he would have probably come talk to the paladin. When King Gus finally approached Lady Yanessa he ask her about the seditionist messages spread by the Candescent Creed in Timmony; the two of them were offered a more private place to have a conversation, and as they were leaving, Azune (on whom Hal had just cast Aid) escorted them.[53]

Shortly after the private meeting between the king and the Photarch started, the former was poisoned and the latter was shot down, as assassins entered the room. Azune cast See Invisibility on himself and went after these enemies: he missed with his Quickened Booming Blade, but cast Flaming Sphere immediately after, dealing some damage. The Arcane Marshal kept fighting, hitting and pushing with his hammer and moving his Flaming Sphere, but in the middle of it, with his See Invisibility he noticed that the doors of the room were blocked because a hidden mage was focused on keeping them that way; shortly after, however, two of the assassins focused on Azune and knocked him unconscious, ending his Flaming Sphere too. Bolaire woke him up with a potion moments later, and the paladin, moving and putting himself at risk, managed to kill an enemy with Booming Blade. While Murray was helping Gus (now somewhat recovered after his Dominated druid regained control of his actions), Bolaire managed to break the concentration of the invisible mage, and the doors opened: Sir Filoneus and some of the magpies, led by Varen, came in, and the latter immediately called Azune, asking for instructions. Azune, in turn, noticed that one of the assassins reacted to his name, and moments later, when the enemies' executioner was about to hit him, the assassin shielded him and was hit by the weapon instead; as she fell to the floor, Azune got a glimpse of sunset eyes, and then the helm fell off, revealing the gaunt face of Mayali. Azune focused on his sister, protecting her and holding her hand as he sent energy to heal her wound; she smiled with difficulty and told him that she remembered, and when Varen shouted that they had to keep one of the assassins alive, the paladin responded that she should be the one. However, Mayali whispered that she wasn't sure if she would ever have a good moment like that one again, and broke a spell glyph, teleporting away. Azune started losing control of his temper and prepared to attack the enemy that had wounded his sister, but when Bolaire Commanded him to calm, he accepted the order, realizing that the executioner was now the only person left to be captured. However, after the latter wounded Sir Filoneus Halovar, he beheaded him ignoring the warnings of the others. Moments later, as more people arrived, Yanessa Halovar rose again, surrounded by light as she came back to life.[54] During the commotion that followed Azune took charge of security (preventing Sir Filoneus from overstepping, although the nobleman didn't realize); he tried to give protection to King Gus, but he distrusted the paladin when he realized he was part of the team that was supposed to keep people safe. As part of the research that followed, Azune collected pieces of the spell glyphs used in combat, but was unable to find the black bolt that hit Yanessa. As soon as the Schemers were able to meet in private, Hal told them about his fight with Gorson Brightmane (which had freed Cyrus's mind), and Murray, in turn, revealed that the resurrection they had just witnessed was fake, and that the assassination attempt had likely been staged by the Halovars. The wizard also expressed interest in Azune's sister, explaining that Mayali could act as a witness of the plans of House Halovar; Azune then said that if they managed to find Mayali, he would do whatever Murray wanted.

Convergence

The following day, Azune, Bolaire, and Murray were working at the Archanade when the Soldiers arrived. That led to a chaotic meeting in which they exchanged information about their discoveries, although at first Azune didn't trust Wicander due to the recent events involving his family. Later Hero interrupted their meeting to let them know Sir Harondus was outside, looking for Azune. The Arcane Marshal met with him and told him about his discoveries regarding the assassination attempt (including the fact that the poisons used were connected to the Lana Strossa, a guild present in Ezir and Argosia). Harondus then said that now that Groto had recovered from his visions of the events at the Palazzo Davinos, there was interest in using that knowledge against House Tachonis. He told Azune to organize a solid case in less than 24 hours and to present it to House Einfasen at the Stahlkeep rather than at the Guard's Brethren Hall, to which Azune agreed,[55] thinking about how to proceed, and even considering presenting Demodus as a witness, even if it would be dangerous for the illusionist.[56]

When Soldiers, Seekers, and Schemers gathered at Hal's home they had a long conversation during which they shared all the information they had and theorized about Thjazi's last plans, and how to act; during the conversation, Azune was particularly prolific with the theories, although the general conclusion was that they didn't have enough information to confirm anything yet. When people were leaving in groups, Azune asked Thimble and Murray to stay with him for a moment, telling them about his upcoming meeting with the Einfasens, and manifesting the early signs of a panic attack as he said he felt he had been lying too much, that he was burning away his innocence and that no one would remember him as the boy he had been; Thimble and Murray (and Vaelus too, later) tried to comfort him, although the diviner expressed her concern about the paladin stopping a good job, and also his willingness to put people at risk to support his case against House Tachonis. Occtis, who had been suggested as a potential companion/witness for the task, said he wouldn't go himself because it would reveal too much about his current situation, but he told Azune the version of himself he had just met was a good one, and accepted to share with him a letter from his family. Murray promised Azune that when his job was done, she would give him pizza and all the ice-cream he wanted, but made him promise she would be able to talk to Demodus before getting him into trouble again, and demanded that she would be involved too; Azune agreed to the terms, and decided he would go to the Stahlkeep the next morning, rather than that night. After Azune calmed down (and after being encouraged by Varen), him, Thimble, Occtis, and Vaelus accompanied Murray to her meeting with King Gus. During the encounter the ruler of Timmony apologized for talking to Azune harshly the previous night, as Sir Zavisi Hewn, partner of the late Sir Carbrady, had told him how the Arcane Marshal had fought to defend them. Azune and his friends, in turn, told King Augustus about the conspiracy of the houses and the threat against Timmony, and the paladin gave him a copy of his notes about it; he also shared Occtis's letter, and after some debate they decided it to tear it in half, so that Gus could keep the part that mentioned his homeland. By the end of the meeting, King Gus had agreed to be their ally in a potential rebellion, although he joked immediately after saying that if Azune told anyone he would kill him.[57] They spoke for a little bit longer, and Harving Bowsprit agreed to help members of the Magpies find security-related jobs. Azune also praised Murray's skills as a wizard and a teacher when Gus expressed interest in having her as his court mage, but she offered Demodus Blix as an alternative for the time being.

Azune and Murray went to Bolaire's apartment to talk to Demodus, and before they went inside, she made the Arcane Marshal promise that they wouldn't force the gnome to help them, and that they would help him leave the city no matter what. Demodus welcomed them Disguised as Bolaire and at first was excited about finally being able to leave, until Murray clarified he wouldn't be able to go back to the Penteveral, and that they would need a last favor of him beyond his written declaration, if he was willing; Azune warned him about the dangers, but Demodus wasn't scared, and asked only a confirmation that everything he had written was appropriate for the case (Azune read it and told him only to omit mentions to the Stahlkeep, in case the Einfasens got angry). He also asked Demodus to get some information for him about how different creatures of Aramán regarded mortality. After Cyd's petrification was reversed, Schemers, Seekers, and Soldiers met with him at the Archanade and had a session of planning, presenting their potential missions for the day of the premiere, especially after Hal revealed that he had been told by Romina (through Inez) that the meeting of Sundered Houses would take place at the Villa Aurora at the same time as his play. As they were speaking there were several moments of tension between different people, but Azune made them stop, since it was a very bad moment to have disagreements; when he shared his intention of presenting a case against House Tachonis at the Stahlkeep Julien warned him about Lord Otto's knowledge about the attack against the Palazzo Davinos, and that if he pretended not to know about it, the Arcane Marshal should be wary.

The following morning, Azune and Murray, along with Demodus and Groto, visited House Einfasen's fortress, and before going in, Azune used Alter Self to modify his features to make himself look very familiar to his hosts. In front of Lord Einfasen and some of his relatives and vassals, they exposed their case with the available proof and declarations, as efficiently as possible (with Azune subtly Guiding Demodus and then himself). By the end of it, Lord Otto praised the good work he had witnessed and congratulated the people involved, sending Demodus and Murray away, and then Groto (who was promoted to Lieutenant). When Azune was left alone, Otto expressed curiosity about the origin of his sorcery, saying there might be a possibility that he had some common blood with the Einfasens; then, after Azune explained his reputation as a religious man came from a simple moment of kindness, Lord Einfasen commanded him to continue posing as a follower of the Candescent Creed. After that, they rewarded Azune too, giving him a new hammer and promoting him to the rank of Captain.[58]

Julien Davinos

Azune met Sir Julien for the first time when he was young, at the end of the Falconer's Rebellion, and never forgot the encounter.[59] Despite the conflicted past between them, Azune told Julien he admired his capacity to find words for what he was feeling.[60] He offered to support whatever story Julien wanted to tell about how his capture of Thjazi Fang actually occurred. However, perhaps because Julien didn't trust Azune yet, he assumed his gesture of good will hid resentment towards him and his people.[61] Matthew Mercer admitted that during the conversation the knight did sense an understanding between two soldiers, and even a slight flirtation.[62] Luis, in turn, has said that although Azune's mind is not focused on such things at the moment, he can see a scenario in which the paladin and the fighter develop a closer relationship.[63] From an out-of-game perspective, Luis has also revealed that the reason Azune brought up the common past between both characters in a conversation to present Julien with a reason why he should keep in touch with him and the other player characters.[64]

Azune was taken by Thjazi after being abandoned by mercenaries, and grew up admiring him, to a point where he sees himself as a worthy price to pay in a cause involving the orc's survival;[65] he feels a lack of direction after his death,[66] and still thinks of him as an example to follow, and to a degree, as the father he could have had in other circumstances.[67] His relationship with him has conditioned the way he interacts with other people, seeing the way Thjazi treated other people and the level of trust he had with them, and causing the paladin to analyze how his own relationships and the ones of the people around him work.[68]

Hal, on the other hand, was the one actively taking care of him when he was still young, giving him a place in his house and at his table with his biological children;[69] because of it Azune sees the bard as a father figure[70] (even though he, in turn, sees him more like a nephew or cousin).[71] Even as an adult, being alone with Hal is a scenario in which Azune would let himself "crumble" and be fully honest about his emotions and concerns.[72] However, he also keeps some things hidden from the older orc, particularly things he's not proud of and that he did for Thjazi.[73]

Azune met Murray for the first time when he was younger, and she was his mentor, teaching him how to use magic even if he wasn't an actual student of the Penteveral; he has wondered if they met by chance, with the diviner following her own desire to teach, or if Thjazi secretly arranged it.[74] He, in turn, has helped her practice with her dagger a couple of times after some drinks.[75] Years later he considers her a true friend, although they still argue about the ways to approach a problem.[76] She occasionally makes sexual jokes that he doesn't quite get,[77][78] and finds curious that he is unaware of certain expressions.[79]

Azune has expressed that he's sometimes worried that Murray dislikes him because of the institution he works for, but she has assured him that he's a good egg, and each of them is willing to kill for the other[80] (although she did warn him at one point about how he should never force their friendship, good as it was).[81] Moreover, when the dwarf told Azune she loved him after he had just calmed down from a panic attack, he complained because that would make him cry again.[82]

Varen Kadorn

Varen is a former member of the rebellion who now works for House Elbrendi, but Azune still trusts him, enough to share his name as his potential replacement in the Schemers in case he died.[83] Despite being severely traumatized after the war, Varen is still loyal to the cause of the rebellion and to Azune, being willing to do him favors even in complicated situations.[84]

  90. Luis confirmed this in a Bluesky post. He also tweeted that the shaft of the hammer was his arcane focus, but then indicated "jk" ("just kidding").
